'I'm trying to make sure that I'm fit for Lord's final' says Marcus
Richard Walsh - 5 August 2002

England star Marcus Trescothick was back at the County Ground this afternoon, after returning from his holiday in Spain.

I asked him how he felt about Somerset getting to the final of the Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy at Lords.

He told me: "It's really fantastic news. I might not have been at the ground but I kept in touch all day with phone calls and text messages. It was pretty exciting at the end so I can't wait to see the video of the match."

Was he going to be able to play in the final I asked. He told me: "Funny you should ask me that because I have just had Michael Vaughan on the telephone about the same thing. I told him that I'm trying to make sure that I am fit for the Lords final. In fact the target for my return to cricket is the championship match against Lancashire at Blackpool just a few days before the final."

He continued: "It's too soon to be sure at the moment because it's less than three weeks ago that I did it. However after another week hopefully we will have a clearer indication as to how things are progressing."

All Somerset supporters will be hoping that Marcus will be there on August 31st to lead the side out onto the field, to open the batting and at the end to lift the trophy aloft.
