'Overall a good day for us' says Shine after the first day at Canterbury
Richard Walsh - 7 August 2002

England pace man Andy Caddick returned to county championship cricket in some considerable style at Canterbury today, where he helped the Cidermen to bowl Kent out for 271.

After winning the toss and batting first, the hosts lost two early wickets and had slipped to 49 for 2 before Andrew Symonds and David Fulton put on 117 for the third wicket.

Symonds was then out to a combination of the two returning Somerset bowlers, caught by Andy Caddick and bowled by Richard Johnson for 69.

From 166 for 3, wickets fell steadily and Kent were eventually all out for 271 by late afternoon.

Caddick marked his return to first class cricket after a side strain with the impressive figures of 22 overs, 5 maidens, 5 for 65, whilst his fast bowling colleague Johnson, ended with 2 for 62 off 18 overs, and Matt Bulbeck picking up 2 for 68.

The Somerset reply got off to the worst possible of starts when skipper Jamie Cox was out with just a single on the board, and then six runs later Mike Burns followed him back to the pavilion, both batsmen falling to Amjad Khan.

By the close of play Somerset had moved on to 64 for 2, with Matt Wood unbeaten on 26 and Peter Bowler on 17, 208 behind their hosts with 8 wickets in hand.

At the end of the day Somerset coach Kevin Shine told me:" Overall it was a good day for us. Good to see `Caddy' back and getting five wickets for us, and `Johnno' bowled well and managed some good spells."

He continued: "We were reasonably happy to have got them out for 271, but it should have been cheaper. Then when we batted after being 7 for 2 it was an excellent effort from Matt Wood and Peter Bowler to see us to 65 for 2 by the close."
