Book deal for Herschelle Gibbs
Donne Commins - 26 August 2002

South African opening batsman Herschelle Gibbs has confirmed the signing of a book deal between cricket writer Colin Bryden, publishers New Africa Books Pty (Ltd) and himself.

Although the book has yet to be officially titled, it will be a biography on Gibbs. Chapters are in the draft stage and the book has been earmarked for publication in February 2003.

Topics include Herschelle's childhood background and rise to sporting fame; the triumph and heartbreak of the 1999 Cricket World Cup; and of course the controversy surrounding match-fixing and the King Commission hearings. In essence, the book reflects on the career of a young man who comes of age after experiencing the highest of highs and lowest of lows.

"I'm really excited about putting the book together. Each chapter is like a different stage of my life, although mine hasn't been nearly as orderly! People will be able to see how I've got to where I am today, and the hurdles or temptations I've overcome to get here," said Gibbs.

The book's author, Colin Bryden said, "Herschelle Gibbs is one of the most charismatic and talented of South African cricketers. He's had his full share of controversy in a relatively short career, and that coupled with his uniquely South African background makes for a fascinating story."

Neill Duffy, CEO of Octagon South Africa, who act as Herschelle's commercial agents said, "We're very excited to have negotiated this deal on behalf of Herschelle. It's an example of the ever growing commercial value that exists for today's professional sportsmen and women, and in Herschelle's case, the publication of the book will further develop his `brand' ahead of the 2003 Cricket World Cup."
