Eleventh-hour World Cup chance for Kirsten CricInfo - 14 December 2002
Gary Kirsten has been recalled to the South African squad for the last two one-day cricket internationals against Pakistan. Kirsten, 35, was dropped after the first-ever Morocco Cup in August, and has not played one-day international cricket since. Middle order batsman Neil McKenzie and left-arm spinner Nicky Boje have both been dropped. The matches, which take place in Paarl on Monday and Cape Town on Wednesday, are South Africa's last two one-day games before the the end-of-year deadline for naming their World Cup squad. Convenor of selectors Omar Henry says Kirsten has been recalled to bring stability to the batting. "He brings such a calmness to the innings in the way he goes about getting his runs," said Henry. "His style may be in contrast to the other batsmen in the side but it also complements them." "We decided to give some of the other guys an opportunity, so now it's time to see what Gary has to offer in the last two games." South Africa squad: Shaun Pollock (captain), Mark Boucher, Boeta Dippenaar, Allan Donald, Herschelle Gibbs, Andrew Hall, Jacques Kallis, Gary Kirsten, Lance Klusener, Makhaya Ntini, Robin Peterson, Jonty Rhodes, Graeme Smith, Monde Zondeki. © CricInfo Ltd.
