Bengal hold on for a draw against Hyderabad Staff Reporter - 24 December 2002
Devang Gandhi made 72 while Amit Chakraborty and Rohan Gavaskar made 42 and 43 respectively as Bengal hung on to earn a draw against Hyderabad in an elite group encounter that ended on Sunday. Hyderabad, though, had the satisfaction of earning a point for securing the first-innings lead. On Sunday morning, Hyderabad, who resumed their second innings on 127/1, went on to post 238/5 declared. Overnight not out batsmen Daniel Manohar (119) and A Nand Kishore (100) were the men who scored most of the runs. Needing 321 for victory, Bengal made a determined bid in their final innings with Gandhi, Chakraborty and Gavaskar leading the way, but the loss of wickets at steady intervals meant that they ended up having to fight to avoid an outright defeat. Fortunately for them, Alokendu Lahiri (21*) and Saurashish Lahiri (1*) played out the last five overs to help them end the match at 248/8. For Hyderabad, off-spinner Jogram Singh Yadav was the most successful bowler with four wickets. Rajasthan complete six-wicket win over Himachal Pradesh Rajasthan, who began the final day needing just 60 runs, lost four wickets on their way to a six-wicket win over Himachal Pradesh in another elite group encounter at Jaipur. After the top-order batsmen were dismissed, it eventually fell on KJ Chodhary (3*) and S Mathur (4*) to see their side to a win that earned them two points. Mumbai thwart Railways' bid for an outright win A century from Wasim Jaffer and a cultured 62 from opener Vinayak Mane helped Mumbai draw their match against Railways at the Karnail Singh Stadium, Delhi. The duo, who got together when the Mumbai score was 10/1, managed to forge a 137-run second wicket partnership before Mane fell. After that wickets began to fall rapidly, but with Jaffer notching up 117 and Rajesh Pawar chipping in with 25, Mumbai managed to post 242/9 declared in 75 overs. Jai P Yadav claimed five wickets for Railways. Faced with the prospect of chasing down an improbable target of 209 off 23 overs, the defending Ranji champions settled for a draw, making 66/2 in their second innings. Haryana complete innings victory over Bihar Bihar crumbled to an innings and 48-run defeat against Haryana on the final day of the plate group encounter between the two sides at the Nehru Stadium, Gurgaon Bihar, who resumed their second innings on 136/2, lasted just 38.1 overs on Sunday. Skipper Rajiv Kumar, who made 68, and No 4 Tariq-ur-Rehman, who made 33, were the only batsmen to offer any resistance. For Haryana, leg-spinner Amit Mishra claimed 4-104, to end up with a match-haul of 10-190. Maharashtra complete five-wicket win against Jammu and Kashmir A determined second innings effort from Jammu and Kashmir failed to prevent Maharashtra from securing a five-wicket win at the Deccan Gymkhana Ground, Pune. Jammu and Kashmir, who resumed their second innings at 336/5, went on to post 458 before being all out. Overnight not out batsman SS Salaria had the misfortune of becoming the second Jammu and Kashmir batsman to be dismissed for 99. Further disappointment awaited him and his team when Maharashtra chased down the 193-run target with ease. Skipper Kanitkar, who made 81 off 64 balls, led the home team's assault and ensured that Maharashtra eased past the target in just 27.1 overs. Madhya Pradesh gains first-innings point in drawn encounter against Karnataka Madhya Pradesh managed to hold off Karnataka's valiant bid for victory and secure first-innings point in another plate group encounter at the Captain Roop Singh Stadium, Gwalior. On Sunday morning, Madhya Pradesh, who resumed on 69/3, managed to post 219 all out in their second innings. S Abbas Ali, who made 120 off 204 balls with nine fours and two sixes, was the top-scorer in an innings in which the next best score was 34 by opener M Pasha. In the fourth innings of the match, Karnataka made a spirited effort to overhaul the target of 271, but by the end of 43 overs they could only end up with 210/7. Thilak Naidu, who made an unbeaten 67 off 99 balls, was the highest scorer for the visitors. Kerala, Services match ends in a draw In the morning, Services, who resumed their second innings at 266/7, went on to make 360 all out. All-rounder Sudhakar Garg, who made 52, was the man responsible for getting his team to within 118 runs of the Kerala first innings.
