Dawn Fiery Umar fails to stop KRL from taking lead
Sports Reporter - 24 December 2002

KRL gained a 42-run first innings lead despite a fiery pace bowling by PIA's Umar Gul here on Monday, the third day of their Quaid-i-Azam Trophy Group-IV match.

Saeed Anwar Jr was unlucky to miss his century by just seven runs as KRL, who were 171 for five overnight, were bowled out for 238.

Pacer Aizaz bin Ilyas ended what was a fine innings from Saeed having him caught by Moin for 93, a knock that took him 174 balls.

Umar Gul's pace created problems for the KRL batsmen, playing on their home ground, as he picked up four wickets for the day to finish with six for 97. Najaf Shah and Aizaz, both claimed two wickets apiece.

At the close of play, PIA in their second innings were one without loss in 3.2 overs with Kamran Sajid having opened his account. With him at the crease was Ghulam Ali.

Meanwhile, Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL), helped by half centuries from Hafiz Majid, Faisal Naved and Javed Hayat, zoomed past Rawalpindi to take a massive 178-run first innings lead in their match at Pindi Cricket Stadium.

Starting the third day at the overnight 82 for two, ZTBL were a comfortable 311 for eight at the close of play.

Rawalpindi had managed a paltry 133 in their first innings Sunday. There had been no play on the first day.

Opener Hafiz Majid cracked a patient 83 while Faisal (62) and Javed (57) made valuable contributions down the order to boost the ZTBL total.

Mohammad Akram and Mohammad Fayyaz were the chief wicket- takers, sharing six wickets between them.

On a curtailed day's play at Peshawar's Arbab Niaz Stadium, Karachi Blues fought back to bowl out Peshawar for 125 in the second innings.

Bad light prevented any play at 2.02pm when Karachi Blues had scored seven for one in pursuit of a target of 252. Hopes of any play on Tuesday look bleak because since late afternoon it was raining in Peshawar till the time of filing this report.
