Farrell at the fore Ezra Stuart - 26 December 2002
Last season, popular Barbadian cricket umpire Anthony "Indian" Farrell was an unhappy man when he was controversially overlooked for first-class duties, but he is now smiling again. Farrell, a seasoned local Division One umpire, will finally get a chance to make his debut as a first-class umpire in the upcoming 2003 regional four-day championship. One of Barbados' most qualified cricket umpires, Farrell has been appointed to stand with experienced Guyanese umpire Eddie Nicholls in the sixth-round match between Barbados and the Leeward Islands, scheduled for Kensington Oval, March 7-10. Farrell, also a leading local football referee, is one of six Bajan umpires who will be officiating in matches in the upcoming regional first-class tournament, which starts on January 31. Barbados' highest-ranked umpire Dalton Holder, at Grade Two, has been appointed for three matches, while former president of the Barbados Cricket Umpires Association, Mervyn Jones, Halley Moore, Vincent Bullen and Tunley Franklyn have one-match appointments. Jones and Holder have been appointed for the first-round match between West Indies "B" and India, which has been earmarked for the scenic Windward Ground in Lucas Street,St Philip from January 31 to February 3.
