Sarwan taking landmarks in stride 28 December 2002
Guyanese batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan has dismissed the critics who might say his first Test and One-Day hundreds were nothing to shout about because they came against cricket minnows Bangladesh. The 22-year-old was all smiles while intransit at the Grantley Adams International Airport on Monday as he recounted the joy of reaching those landmarks. "At the end of the day, you have to go out and perform to the best of your ability. "If I hadn't scored a hundred in that game, what would have happened? What would they have said?" he asked. "You will hear good things about you, you will hear bad things, but it is just the way you go around dealing with it. "It hasn't worried me. I am pretty happy now I have scored a Test hundred," Sarwan said. "I've been waiting for quite some time. I was a bit disappointed to know that I have been getting some good starts but I have not been able to carry on. It has been good to know I carried on this time." Looking back on the tour to India and Bangladesh, he was happy with the way he played in both One-Day series which the West Indies won, but he was disappointed with his performances during the Tests against India, which were lost 2-0. "I thought I batted pretty well during the One-Day series in India and the One-Day series against Bangladesh, but I was a bit disappointed with the way things went in the Test series against India. "Having said that, I was pretty satisfied with the way I batted in Bangladesh in both forms of the game, especially in the Test match having to score my first hundred, that was a big relief." He hopes to be able to carry on and score more centuries. Sarwan said the pitches in the sub-continent were similar to those in the Caribbean, but in India they were very good for batting. "What I have found is that they [the pitches] have helped me more mentally than technically, because it has taught me how to be patient and wait on bad balls, especially during the One-Day series against India. "I thought that contributed to my performance against Bangladesh." © The Barbados Nation
