Friend flails the Kenyans
Wisden CricInfo staff - December 7, 2002

Zimbabwe 273 for 4 (Friend 91, A Flower 58*) beat Kenya 181 for 6 by 47 runs - D/L method
Scorecard

Travis Friend was Zimbabwe's unlikely batting hero, as Kenya fell well short of a stiff target in the second one-day international at Kwekwe. Messrs Duckworth and Lewis eventually settled the match after rain and bad light forced an early finish, but with Kenya still 92 runs adrift with six overs remaining, the result was academic – Zimbabwe's total of 273 for 4 was always going to be out of reach.

Friend, who averages little more than 13 with the bat, stole 91 runs from 81 deliveries after being sent in as a pinch-hitter. He clubbed two sixes and nine fours, after coming in at the fall of Mark Vermeulen for 8 (11 for 1), and dominated a 146-run partnership with Alistair Campbell, until he was run out going for a tight second run, just nine short of his hundred.

Campbell played the sheet anchor role. His patient 71 took 122 balls, and when he was eventually caught on the boundary off Maurice Odumbe, Andy Flower (58 not out) and Craig Wishart (22 not out) were on hand to make the most of the last 10 overs.

Zimbabwe had only managed 42 runs in the first 15 overs, thanks to an exemplary spell from Martin Suji, who picked up the early wicket and conceded just 17 runs in his ten overs. Friend's aggression, though, turned the game back towards the Zimbabweans.

Kenya were strengthened by the return of their captain, Steve Tikolo, and while he and Kennedy Obuya were batting together, there was a glimmer of hope. But Obuya was caught by Friend off the spin of Grant Flower for 55 (94 for 3), and before another run had been added, Tikolo was run out for 20.
