Breaking the duck
Wisden CricInfo staff - December 11, 2002

India went into the first Test against New Zealand at the Basin Reserve in Wellington hoping to break a jinx – of having not won a Test series abroad in 16 years. But this is not the first time India have come to this venue seeking to overturn a jinx. When India toured New Zealand in 1967-68, they hadn't won an overseas Test series in all their 36 years as a Test cricketing nation. And when they entered the third Test at Wellington, they had a unique chance of achieving just that goal. The series was tied 1-1, and this was the venue where it would either come together or fall apart.

In the event, India won by a handsome margin of eight wickets, the stars of the show in seamer-friendly New Zealand being the two spinners, Erapalli Prasanna and Bapu Nadkarni. Prasanna took 5 for 32 in the first innings, Nadkarni bowled superbly in the second for 6 for 43, and a magnificent 143 by Ajit Wadekar in India's first innings ensured that the opportunity didn't slip.

So can they do it again?
