Windies in the driving seat Wisden CricInfo staff - December 16, 2002
West Indies 38 for 1 trail Bangladesh 194 by 156 runs West Indies took control on the first day of the second Test at Chittagong after bowling Bangladesh for 194 inside two-and-a-half sessions. Although West Indies lost Wavell Hinds early on in their reply, by the close they were on the way to establishing a platform on which to build another large first-innings lead. After widespread criticism of their dismal second-innings performance at Dhaka, Bangladesh were in need of some morale-boosting performances. They were heartened by the fact that six of their batsmen got a start, but disappointed that none went on to play a commanding innings. Yet again they failed to pass 200, and it would have been far worse but for a dogged ninth-wicket stand of 36 between Khaled Masud and Manjural Islam. Bangladesh won the toss, chose to bat on a hard, grassy pitch that appeared certain to support the fast bowlers and made a solid start with Al-Shahriar Rokon and Hannan Sarkar putting on 43 for the first wicket. Al-Shahriar was especially impressive, smashing five beautifully-timed fours off the fast bowlers. But when he fell leg-before to Vasbert Drakes for 25, the floodgates opened. Darren Powell struck twice in a row, removing Sarkar and Habibul Bashar, and Bangladesh were reeling at 48 for 3. Mohammad Ashraful and Sanwar Hossain added 64 runs, but again the good work was undone when both got out inside an over midway through the afternoon. First Pedro Collins snapped up Ashraful for a gritty 28 (112 for 4), and then Powell had Hossain caught by wicketkeeper Ridley Jacobs for 36 (116 for 5). Alok Kapali, who had been so impressive in the last Test, made only 2 before Collins had him caught by Chris Gayle at first slip (125 for 6), and only a brave counter-attacking knock from Masud prevented the tail being blown away cheaply yet again. He made 32 runs off 93 balls, holding the tail together before holing out to Ramnaresh Sarwan in the covers off Drakes. Collins and Powell picked up three wickets each. Drakes and Jermaine Lawson shared the remaining four wickets. West Indies lost Hinds in the fourth over, gloving Tapash Baisya to wicketkeeper Mashud for 14 (16 for 1) but Gayle and Sarwan played out the remaining overs in deteriorating light, both determined to be in a position to resume their quest for cheap runs on the second day.
