Warne aims for quick return Wisden CricInfo staff - December 26, 2002
Shane Warne, who is missing today's fourth Test at the MCG afterdislocating his shoulder 11 days ago, says that "the World Cup is definitely my goal", and that he is giving himself "every chance" of playing in the competition, which starts on Feb 8. Warne injured his shoulder in an awkward fall while trying to field off his own bowling in the VB Series match against England at Melbourne on Dec 15. It was initially suggested that he would be out for at least six weeks, which would take him right up to the World Cup - but gloomier soothsayers predicted that he might never rip down a zooter again. Speaking on Channel 9 TV's "Cricket Show", Warne told Simon O'Donnell that his recovery seemed to be on track. "I'm just going to give it my best shot," he said. "I don't know if that's a 50/50 chance or whatever. At this stage, all I know is that I'm committed to the rehab, I'm committed to what I have to do in the next four to five weeks and hopefully I'll be on that plane to the World Cup. Only time will tell but I'm going to give myself every chance." Warne, who was presented with a framed baggy green cap by the ACB at tea-time on the first day to commemorate his 100th Test appearance (in South Africa earlier this year), added that Errol Alcott, Australia's physiotherapist, seemed happy with his progress too. "When I saw him on Christmas Eve, he was very happy with my movement and was very happy with my progress after an operation. If I keep improving like that then my chances will be good." Warne admitted that he had tried to return too soon after an earlier shoulder injury, in 1998-99. "Looking back at that time, you think you're right and you're bowling OK. There's nothing like those first few games getting over your bowling and getting your confidence back. I probably rushed into it a little bit too quickly, and wasn't bowling as well as I would like, so I definitely won't be doing that this time, I won't be coming back until I'm 100% right. Only time will tell."
