The Experiment
Wisden CricInfo staff - December 27, 2002

ICC Champions Trophy, 12-30 Sep
It would be far-fetched to accuse the ICC of radicalism, but the experiment with greater technological assistance for umpires during the Champions Trophy can easily be classified as brave, even if it only threw up more questions than it answered. Umpires, for the first time in the history of cricket, were allowed to refer any decision, including lbws, to the third eye. It was only a half measure because the ICC chose to ignore more sophisticated, but arguably contentious, devices like the Snick-o-meter and Hawkeye, but for both the proponents and opponents of technology in cricket, this was an opportunity to witness first-hand the advantages and the perils of - depending on how you looked at it - lending umpires a helping hand or further impinging on their authority.
