The Confrontation
Wisden CricInfo staff - December 27, 2002
AUS v PAK, 11-12 Oct, Sharjah
The feud that had its genesis in Pakistan's 1999-2000 tour of Australia
culminated in an awesome desert storm at Sharjah. It started on the second
day when Hayden edged Shoaib to fine leg. Words were exchanged. Just after Hayden had
reached a hundred, Shoaib bounced him and the verbals resurfaced. Hayden
edged the next ball to third man. Then Shoaib aborted his run-up, this time
to admonish Shane Warne for taking liberties while backing up. The gloves
were off. Next ball Hayden pulled away for no apparent reason just before
Shoaib reached the crease. Shoaib was at boiling point by
now. He charged in and flung down a bouncer which hit Hayden on the helmet.
As Hayden straightened himself up and looked back at Shoaib, he received a
volley of invective. Rather than stand and stare, Hayden replied with a
verbal burst of his own. You couldn't tell who the fast bowler was. John
