Turner citing thrown out - Wellington captain suspended
Lynn McConnell - 21 February 2002

Wellington got off free from the code of conduct charge made against the entire playing XI by Otago coach Glenn Turner today, however, on a separate charge Richard Jones was suspended for one game.

At least Jones' captaincy role will be replaced by the regular captain Matthew Bell returning from his one match suspension.

A further charge by Turner against Wellington coach Vaughn Johnson for comments published in The Dominion was withdrawn after an apology was received by Turner from Johnson.

Code of Conduct Commissioner, Ross Crotty dismissed the charge against the State Wellington Firebirds team of "unacceptable behaviour" under Rule 2(a) of the Code, finding no jurisdiction under the Code to cite a whole team.

Turner, who reported the alleged breach, accepts that, under the Code, individual players, rather than a team must be cited and has advised New Zealand Cricket that he accepts the Commissioner's finding.

Turner said that the Code of Conduct hearing provided him with an appropriate forum to air his concerns and, while he was disappointed that the Commissioner could not make a comment on the behaviour of the Wellington players, he felt his concerns were listened to and recorded accurately. Consequently he was prepared to let the matter rest in the confidence that Cricket Wellington officials will seriously consider the issues raised.

New Zealand Cricket will not seek leave to appeal the decision.

During the same match Jones was cited by the umpires under Rule 2(a) of the Code "unacceptable behaviour."

Commissioner Crotty found Jones to have breached the Code by showing dissent towards an umpire's decision and also for insulting an umpire. Jones has been suspended for five playing days from February 25 to March 3 inclusive. This precludes him from playing in the State Championship match against the State Canterbury Wizards at the Basin Reserve from February 25-28.

New Zealand Cricket will not appeal the decision. Jones has 48 hours to decide whether he will seek leave to appeal.
