Kaneria caught Bangladesh in spin web
Shahryar Khan - 11 January 2002

Pakistan defeated Bangladesh by an innings and 178 runs in the third day of the first Test in the Coca-Cola series. The host batsmen were terrible in their approach in dealing with the cunning Pakistanis; especially their old enemy Danish Kaneria, who alone polished off the local batting order by capturing a haul of 7 wickets. The Bangladeshis, not learning from their previous mistakes, lost their wickets like schoolboys against the wily of the leg-spinner, who made a similar kind of display in Multan lat year. The local boys were all out for 152 twenty-five minutes after the tea break.

Mehrab, whose career is in peril these days, should have played Kaneria with caution before nicked a catch to Inzamam at slip on 19. The next ball brought the second doom for the hosts and delight for Kaneria, who was well in front to get another haul against Bangladesh. Habibul Bashar, the most judicious successful batsman for his country, went for a wayward shot that only saw his way towards pavilion. Waqar at short cover hold the catch in a spree. Bangladesh were 2 down for 43.

Mohammed Ashraful, who is another batsman probably waiting for being axed in the next Test, fell to a cunning Razzak delivery that took swung outward after pitching out side the off and took the edge of Ash's bat. Younis Khan at silly point was waiting for the catch delightfully to gift Kaneria his third one.

Dejected Bangladeshis could be down to seven if the Pakistanis didn't miss three easy chances. Sanwar lasted for seven minutes before Kaneria, who turned out to be Shane Warne against Bangladesh, forced the wretched batsman bestow a simple lollypop catch to Shahdab Kabir at silly point. At the fall of the 4th wicket it was made clear that the home team was going to set a record of being defeated within three days in three consecutive Tests.

Aminul Islam, Khaled Masud fell cheaply. Al-Sahariar, who sustained a finger injury, flogged the Pakistani bowlers all around, especially he punished Kaneria with grudge. Finally Waqar Younis plumbed him before the off stump.

Bangladesh lost their 7th wicket at 90 and 8th at 112. Fahim Muntasir put some resistance against Kaneria and Waqar and scored some boundaries all around. But the prolific leggie dispatched both Mohammed Sharif and Muntasir. Muntasir added 13 runs in the final wicket stand with Manjurul before Kaneria got him out at Sami's hands. The all rounder to scored 33 as Bangladesh ended up with 152. Danish captured a haul of 7 wickets for 77 runs.

Earlier Pakistan were bowled out for 490. Abdur Razzak added 20 runs to his overnight total and finally returned with 134 off Manjurul Islam. Wasim Akram didn't bat due to his injury. Enamul Haque was the most successful bowler for his country as he claimed 4 for 136.

Abdur Razzak was declared man-of-the-match for his scintillating knock of 134. Besides, he didn't let The Pakistanis feel the absence of Wasim Akram as he equally good with the ball too. From both innings he brought off 4 wickets.
