ACB Williams sidelined by fractured right thumb
Australian Cricket Board - 12 January 2002

Australian fast bowler Brad Williams may miss the rest of the VB Series against New Zealand and South Africa after fracturing his right thumb on Friday.

Williams, who was making his one-day international debut, suffered the injury while batting when he was struck by a delivery from Shane Bond towards the end of the home side's 23-run loss to the Black Caps at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Subsequent x-rays revealed a horizontal fracture near the top of the thumb.

The injury is set to sideline the Western Warriors player for at least three weeks.

Commenting on the injury, Brad Williams said: "To make my debut and play at the MCG was a dream come true, so to have it destroyed like this is a massive let-down.

"It's certainly meant it will be a debut I won't forget.

"But throughout my career, whenever I've had any injuries, I've always been able to stay positive and I'm not going to see this any differently," he added.

Williams will remain in Melbourne over the weekend and will see a specialist on Monday.

A decision on a replacement player will be made in due course.

Australia's next match in the VB Series is a day-night game against South Africa at the MCG on Sunday 13 January.

The match starts at 1430 and tickets are still available through Ticketmaster7 on 1300 13 61 22.

The umpires for the match are Steve Davis and Simon Taufel. Bob Parry will act as third umpire and former Indian Test batsman Hanumant Singh is the International Cricket Council's match referee.
