England make light of PNG score in good conditions
Lynn McConnell - 23 January 2002

Papua New Guinea made light of England's attack when scoring a creditable 222/6 on Lincoln Green today.

But in good batting conditions England wrapped up a six wicket win in 28 overs to be in a position to win their Group C of the ICC Under-19 World Cup. Their crucial match to decide that will be against Pakistan on Friday.

PNG opening batsman Frank Joseph dominated his side's innings with 92 runs scored off 126 balls. He hit one six and 12 fours and featured in a 129-run third wicket stand with Christopher Amini who scored 58 off 114 balls.

It proved a good work-out for the England bowlers as PNG scored 222/6. England's right-arm fast bowler Kyle Hogg finished with two wickets for 41 runs off nine overs while Paul McMahon, the off-spinner had another good spell with his 10 overs going wicketless, but for only 23 runs.

PNG's bowling could not match their batting effort however, and Nicholas Compton, who scored 58 off 64 balls, and Kadeer Ali with 73 off only 43 balls, of which 14 went for four, added 103 for the first wicket.

Nicky Peng rattled on 41 off 31 balls and Hogg hit 28 off 20 as England raced home for the win.
