Reiffel draws the curtain
Victorian Cricket Association - 23 January 2002
Bushrangers captain and greatest ever wicket-taker Paul Reiffel, today drew the curtain on his decorated career by retiring from first-class cricket. The retirement is effective immediately.
Bushrangers Chairman of Selectors, Shaun Graf commented on Reiffel's retirement this afternoon. "The decision came somewhat of a shock to us, but we respect Paul's decision and thank him for his enormous contribution to the team during his career, in particular the last two seasons as captain".
VCA Chief Executive Officer Ken Jacobs paid tribute to Reiffel. "The VCA would like to congratulate Paul on his fine career for both Victoria and Australia. Achieving the mantle as Victoria's greatest ever wicket-taker this season was both timely and deserved and we wish Paul all the very best in his future endeavours".
In selection news, the Bushrangers made two changes from the side defeated outright in the Pura Cup match in Perth against the Western Warriors. Along with Reiffel's retirement, Colin Miller has been omitted, paving the way for first-class debutants, 20 year-old Melbourne all-rounder Andrew McDonald and Prahran leg-spinner Bryce McGain, 29.
