Dawn Tanvir inspires Karachi 'Whites'
24 January 2002

Paceman Tanvir Ahmed continued his excellent form in the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy when he inspired Karachi Whites to a convincing 121-run victory over Gujranwala with a session to spare at the National Stadium Wednesday.

Tanvir, a lanky well-built bowler, bowled with venom, zest and aggression to finish with four for 84 from 21 overs as Gujranwala, chasing 348 for victory, were dismissed for 226.

The youngster, who took 19 wickets in six matches for Pak PWD in the Patron's Trophy Grade-I championship earlier in the season, has shown mark improvement as he now has 26 wickets from four matches.

Had Gujranwala batted with some common sense, they might have scared the life out of last season's runners-up. When the match ended, 30 overs were still to be bowled as Gujranwala scored their runs at 4.26 to keep the require run-rate in check. But probably Gujranwala players had to go for shopping as they threw caution to the wind and kept swinging their bats at everything.

Majid Saeed, Gujranwala skipper, looked a threat until Tanvir produced a superb outswinger and Ghulam Ali completed the action in the first slip. Tanvir then stamped Karachi's victory when he sent Hafiz Khalid's off-stump on a walk.

Prior to that, Tanvir had Imran Abbas and Naveed Arif after Owais Athar dismissed both the openers to leave the visitors reeling at 118 for four.

Arif Mahmood showed a lot of courage and guts when he took the field after a nasty blow on his forehead off Mubashir Nazir to finish with three for 28. He had snappedup four for 28 in the first innings.
