Banglas slump to Saqlain Wisden CricInfo staff - January 15, 2002
Close Pakistan 99 for 1 (Taufeeq Umar 47*, Younis Khan 47*) trail Bangladesh 148 (Saqlain Mushtaq 5-35, Danish Kaneria 4-62) by 49 runs
The nightmare just got worse. Another Bangladeshi batting collapse, this time hastened by Saqlain Mushtaq's first Test five-for since November 2000 and four more wickets for Danish Kaneria, has already turned this game into a foregone conclusion. In their latest impression of an over-zealous concertina, Bangladesh lost nine wickets for 91 as Saqlain, extracting turn and bounce even on the first day, picked up 5 for 35 without breaking sweat. Pakistan cruised to within 49 runs of Bangladesh by the close. Bangladesh actually made a reasonable start after winning the toss on a dry wicket, and got to the stroke of lunch for the loss of Mohammad Al-Shahriar, caught behind by Rashid Latif for 13 as he aimed a drive at Waqar Younis (21 for 1). But Javed Omar failed to get over a Saqlain delivery that gripped and bounced, and was caught at silly point for a two-hour 17 to make it 57 for 2. It seemed to knock the stuffing out of his team-mates. Straight after lunch Saqlain had Habibul Bashar, the bedrock of recent Bangladeshi innings, caught at silly point by Shadab Kabir for 2 (60 for 3). Then Kaneria joined in. He had already taken 21 wickets in 66 overs at under 10 against Bangladesh, and he soon bamboozled Mehrab Hossain, who misread the googly and was bowled for 16 as he aimed a cut (65 for 4). The slide was on now. Saqlain trapped Sanwar Hossain leg-before for 11 (84 for 5), before Enamul Hoque offered a simple catch to Yousuf Youhana at short square leg off Kaneria for 0 (85 for 6). Some resistance followed, but these things are relative, and when Aminul Islam was held by Youhana at silly point off Kaneria for 25, it was 112 for 7. Next to go was Fahim Muntasir, on 9, who edged a Kaneria legbreak to slip where Inzamam-ul-Haq gobbled the chance (126 for 8). Seven balls later Mohammad Sharif couldn't resist a dance down the wicket, but he missed and was stumped by Latif off Saqlain for a glorious 0 (127 for 9). The captain Khaled Mashud went down with some guns blazing, and helped scrape 21 out of the last wicket before perishing to a catch at deep midwicket for 28 to give Saqlain his first five-for since he took 8 for 164 against England at Lahore in 2000-01. In their five innings against Pakistan, Bangladesh now have totals of 134, 148, 160, 152 and 148. Pakistan lost Shadab Kabir for 4 as he nicked Mohammad Sharif to the keeper to make it 12 for 1, but it was to be their only scare. Taufeeq Umar made the early running, but Younis Khan soon caught up, and by the close both men had struck eight boundaries. They may never get a better chance to turn 47s into 200s.
Teams Pakistan 1 Taufeeq Umar, 2 Shadab Kabir, 3 Younis Khan, 4 Yousuf Youhana, 5 Inzamam-ul-Haq, 6 Abdur Razzaq, 7 Rashid Latif (wk), 8 Saqlain Mushtaq, 9 Waqar Younis (capt), 10 Danish Kaneria, 11 Shoaib Akhtar. Lawrence Booth is assistant editor of Wisden.com. © Wisden CricInfo Ltd |
