scorecard

Pakistan inflicted another crushing defeat on Bangladesh, wrapping up the second Test shortly after tea on the third day. Trailing by 317 in the first innings, Bangladesh folded for 148 – exactly as many as they had mustered in the first innings.

Apart from an aggressive 51 from Habibul Bashar and some stubborn resistance from Sanwar Hossain, none of the batsmen showed the stomach for a fight. Waqar Younis and Shoaib Akhtar took four wickets apiece, while Saqlain Mushtaq chipped in with two. Bangladesh were already staring down the barrel at lunch, after losing three wickets in the morning; things didn't get much better in the afternoon.

Shoaib started the slide for Bangladesh in the second over after lunch with a superb yorker that Aminul Islam failed to keep out. The ball crashed into off stump, and Aminul trudged back to the hut for 2 (41 for 4).

Sanwar joined Bashar for the only meaningful partnership of the innings. They crashed 69 runs at a run a ball, as Bashar took the attack to the bowlers. His 51 came off just 49 balls with nine fours, most of them beautifully executed drives off Shoaib.

The 16th over of the innings was especially memorable. Shoaib's first ball was guided through the slips for four, the fifth was eased through extra cover, and the sixth flicked nonchalantly to the square-leg fence. Shoaib's next over brought Habibul eight more runs, and Waqar quickly took him off the attack.

Sanwar, meanwhile, mixed solid defence with an occasional flourish, as Bangladesh brought up their 100. It was too good to last though.

The first over after drinks gave Pakistan the breakthrough, as Bashar was snapped up by Shadab Kabir at short leg off Saqlain (110 for 5). Sanwar was the next to fall, edging Saqlain to Younis Khan at first slip for a well-compiled 30 (128 for 6).

With chief tormentor Bashar out of the way, Waqar brought Shoaib back into the attack, and he struck twice in his second over, the last before tea. Enamul Hoque was clean bowled by a yorker for 9 (144 for 7), and then Fahim Muntasir failed to keep out a good-length ball and was castled for 2 (147 for 8).

Pakistan required just eight more deliveries to wrap things up after the interval. Shoaib got through Mohammad Sharif's defences to bowl him for 0 (147 for 9), and then Waqar had Manjural Islam caught by Younis Khan at gully first ball to hand Bangladesh their tenth defeat in 11 Tests, and their seventh by an innings.

Earlier, Yousuf Youhana reached his second double-century in Tests, as Pakistan declared at 465 for 9. Saqlain (7) and Shoaib (2) departed early this morning, but Danish Kaneria held on for 25 minutes, and Youhana farmed the strike cleverly, reaching the milestone with an audacious pulled six off Sharif.

Bangladesh had 10 overs to bat before lunch - and lost three wickets to Waqar. Javed Omar went in the first over, nicking to wicketkeeper Rashid Latif (0 for 1). Waqar then struck a double blow, dismissing Mehrab Hossain and Mohammad Al-Shahriar in identical fashion. Both were caught behind, Mehrab for 14 (23 for 2), and Al-Shahriar for 8 (24 for 3). It was the signal for another familiar collapse.
