Lillee to coach England youngsters Wisden CricInfo staff - January 17, 2002
Dennis Lillee is to oversee the development of two of England's most promising fast-bowling prospects. Mark Footitt and Adam Harrison, both 16, travel to India next week to begin a two-week course at Lillee's renowned MRF Pace Foundation in Madras. They will be accompanied by the former Nottinghamshire fast bowler Andy Pick, one of the ECB's seven national coaches. "This is a wonderful opportunity," said Pick. "[Footitt and Harrison] both have genuine fast-bowling talent and they are bound to benefit from someone of Dennis Lillee's calibre." Harrison, from Glamorgan, won the Test Match Special Young Cricketer of the Year award in 2001, after opening the bowling for England U15 against Denmark and Ireland last summer. He is also a handy middle-order batsman, and the brother of David, who is on the Glamorgan staff. Footitt, who took part in training sessions at Nottinghamshire from the age of eight, is a left-arm seamer, although he bats right-handed. He also played for the U15s last summer. The MRF Pace Foundation has played a major part in the development of several prominent Test cricketers, including Makhaya Ntini of South Africa and Zimbabwe's Henry Olonga, whose action Lillee helped to remodel, after he was called for throwing on debut in 1994-95. "At the ECB, we try to identify the most promising young players as early as possible," Pick said. "These two bowlers undoubtedly have great potential." © Wisden CricInfo Ltd |
