Batsmen to blame, says Bangladeshi captain Wisden CricInfo staff - January 23, 2002
Bangladesh's captain Khaled Mashud blamed his batsmen for defeat in the first one-day international against Pakistan. Pakistan were restricted to 202 in their 50 overs, but Bangladesh could only muster 153 for 7 in reply. "We cannot do well unless our top order applies itself better," said Mashud, who top-scored with 54 not out himself. "We should learn to value our wickets and not play unnecessary shots." Bangladesh were humiliated in the two-Test series that preceded the one-dayers, and now have just two day-night matches left to salvage some pride. "I hope we don't repeat our mistakes," Mashud added. "We could have won if the top five batsmen had got runs, but they came under pressure." Trevor Chappell, the Bangladesh coach, was equally critical, though he was pleased with the application shown by the lower order. "It was nice to see them put their heads down and bat for a while," Chappell said. "It was a good example for the others who are known as batsmen." There was also praise for the performances of Mohammad Sharif, 17, and Tareq Aziz, 18, who both took three wickets. "Our fast bowlers give us a lot of hope for the future," said Mashud.
