Papua New Guinea give England a scare
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 24, 2002

Matches played January 23
Dunedin (Carisbrook): Australia 200 in 49.2 overs (Bailey 39, R Nurse 5 for 28) beat West Indies 158 in 44.5 overs (Doherty 3 for 24, Casson 3 for 48) by 42 runs. Australia 5 points, West Indies 0 points.

Australia can thank their lower order for victory against West Indies. From 94 for 5, Mark Cosgrove (27), and bowlers Beau Casson (28) and Xavier Doherty (23) hauled them to 200. Ryan Nurse bowled with zip to claim 5 for 28. At 75 for 2, West Indies were in a strong position but no-one went on to make a match-winning innings. Caught in the web woven by spinner Jarrad Burke (2 for 14 in 10 overs), the West Indies lower order could not match the feats of Australia's.

Lincoln (Lincoln Green): Papua New Guinea 222 for 6 in 50 overs (F Joseph 92, C Amini 58) lost to England 223 for 4 in 28 overs (K Ali 73, N Compton 58) by six wickets. England 5 points, Papua New Guinea 0 points.

England's bowlers had to work hard against Papua New Guinea on a good batting wicket. Frank Joseph and Christopher Amini put on 129 for the third wicket. However any ideas about winning the game were soon dispelled. England scored virtually at will and cruised past their target of 222 with ease. Kadeer Ali whacked 14 of the 43 deliveries he faced to the boundary, making 73. There were still 22 overs available when England crossed the finishing line.

Christchurch (Hagley Oval): Namibia 201 for 5 in 50 overs (B van rooi 62) lost to New Zealand 203 for 4 in 36.5 overs (N Broom 85, R Taylor 58*) by six wickets. New Zealand 5 points, Namibia 0 points.

New Zealand cruised past Namibia's modest total with 14 overs to spare. Namibia scored too slowly on a pitch suited to batting. Burton van Rooi bludgeoned 62 from 76 balls but the innings as a whole never ignited. 201 was never enough. Neil Broom made a run-a-ball 85 and Ross Taylor's 46-ball 58 provided the late fireworks and took New Zealand home in time to collect a bonus point. New Zealand have now qualified for the the Super League stage.

Auckland (North Harbour Stadium): India 227 for 8 in 50 overs (C Madan 105*) beat South Africa 156 in 43.3 overs (McLaren 33) by 71 runs. India 4 points, South Africa 0 points.

South Africa let India off the hook after having them at 59 for four. Their bowling lacked the discipline to exploit the lively conditions. The Indian top three fell cheaply but Chanda Madan steadied the ship from No. 6, reaching an accomplished 105 from 109 balls and helping India to 227. India bowled with exactly the control their opponents had lacked and the innings petered out as South Africa were bowled out with seven overs left.
