  • Sachin Tendulkar made 18, his lowest score in nine innings against England this winter. His run of scores in Tests and one-dayers, reads 88, 103, 26, 90, 36, 45, 68, 87*, 18. Indeed it is Tendulkar's lowest score against England since he was out for 1 in the third one-day international at Old Trafford on May 26, 1996 - 17 innings ago. Between then and the start of this winter, including the Test series of 1996, Sharjah 1997-98 and the 1999 World Cup, his scores were: 24, 122, 31, 177, 74, 91 and 22.
  • Ashley Giles's five-for was his first for England in his 11th one-day international, and only the fourth ever by an England spinner in 341 ODIs. Vic Marks took two of those - 5 for 37 against Sri Lanka at Taunton in 1983, and 5 for 20 against New Zealand at Wellington the following winter - and Graeme Hick took 5 for 33 against Zimbabwe at Harare in 1999-2000. Giles's previous-best figures were 2 for 37, against South Africa at The Oval in 1998.

  • England won by two runs, equalling their tightest one-day victory by a runs margin. They also won by two runs at Sydney in 1979-80, in a match in which West Indies were chasing a revised target. England have never won an ODI by one run - but they have lost one, against South Africa at Cape Town in 1999-2000. They have also been involved in two matches where the scores finished level.

  • England maintained their 100% record in ODIs at Delhi. They won their only other match there, against Sri Lanka in the Nehru Cup in 1989-90.

  • Sourav Ganguly and Mohammad Kaif added 111 for the fourth wicket, a record for one-day internationals at Delhi. The previous-best was 110, by Ashok Malhotra and Sandeep Patil against Sri Lanka in 1982-83. This is the 11th ODI on this ground.

  • Ganguly's 74 was his highest score against England in one-day internationals, and his first half-century. His previous-best score was 46, at Old Trafford in 1996 - when he was dismissed by Graham Thorpe. This is Ganguly's ninth one-dayer against England.

  • Nick Knight's hundred was his fourth in one-day internationals. Two of them were against Pakistan in his second and third matches (this was his 70th), and the other came at Bridgetown in 1997-98.

  • As well as batting at No. 4, Andrew Flintoff opened the bowling for England for the first time in an ODI. He is believed to be the first Englishman to bat in the top four and open the bowling since Phil DeFreitas opened against South Africa in the third ODI at Johannesburg in 1995-96.

  • Darren Gough was playing in his 100th ODI. He is the eighth England player to reach this landmark, after Alec Stewart (146), Graham Gooch (125), Allan Lamb (122), Graeme Hick (120), Ian Botham (116), David Gower (114) and Phil DeFreitas (103).

  • Gough came on first change for England, the first time he had not taken the new ball since the match against New Zealand at Auckland in 1997 - 66 games ago.
