Development of Cricket in North and East
BCCSL - 6 July 2002

The Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka is taking steps to encourage the growth of cricket in the Northern and Eastern parts of the country.

A series of Coaching Clinics will be held by the BCCSL in the Mannar, Vavuniya, Polonnaruwa and Trincomalee districts from the 9th to the 12th of July, to support the reorganization of cricket in these areas by District Cricket Associations.

The coaching clinics will focus on all aspects of the game, and will be conducted by Director Cricket Operations Bandula Warnapura, Acting Manager Coaching Sunil Fernando, and Fast Bowling Coach Anusha Samaranayake. The clinics will be held on the 9th at Mannar, 10th at Vavuniya, 11th at Polonnaruwa, and 12th at Trincomalee.

The BCCSL recently conducted a Training Course in Umpiring to educate those aspiring to become umpires from the Jaffna, Mannar, Vavuniya, Trincomalee, Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura districts. The programme attracted 69 participants and was held at the Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium from the 27th to the 30th of June. It was conducted in both Sinhala and Tamil by a team which included Director Umpiring K.T. Francis, and umpires Peter Manuel, J.J. Pushparaja, and D.A.S. Dassanayake.

This was the second Training Course for aspiring umpires. The first was held in Kandy in April, with 22 participants.

The BCCSL and the Jaffna District Cricket Association conducted the Inter-District Northeast Triangular Tournament last October, featuring teams representing the Jaffna, Vavuniya and Batticaloa districts. The tournament was won by the Jaffna District team.
