Duleep Mendis to Work on Sri Lanka Team Strategy
BCCSL - 27 July 2002
The Interim Committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka has appointed Mr. Duleep Mendis, Director Development of the BCCSL, to assist the coach and management of the Sri Lanka team, with a view to formulating fresh strategies and obtaining the best results in the forthcoming tours leading up to the 2003 ICC World Cup.
Mr. Mendis will work closely with the Captain, Coach and Manager of the team, as well as other officials and the players. He will be involved with the team as an advisor and member of the team management, and will be involved in matches played both in Sri Lanka and abroad.
The Interim Committee believes that the team will no doubt gain from his immense experience in the sport, as he has had a lifetime of involvement with cricket. Mr. Mendis has agreed to undertake these duties in addition to his present work as Director Development.
Mr. Mendis first represented Sri Lanka while still in school in 1972, and served as Sri Lanka's Captain from 1983-87. His last appearance for his country was in 1988, by which time he had played 24 Tests and 79 One-Day-Internationals. He served as Coach of the Sri Lanka team, and then was Manager of the Sri Lanka team that won the Wills World Cup in 1996. He has also served as Chairman of the National Selection Committee.
He is presently Chairman of the Asian Cricket Council's Development Committee, and is a Member of the MCC's Advisory Panel on World Cricket. He is an Honorary Life Member at Lords.
