SPCL 2/3 - Winchester derby the pick of the week
Mike Vimpany - 14 June 2002

The Winchester KS-Easton & Martyr Worthy derby at River Park, 1pm, dominates the Southern Electric Premier League Division 2 programme.

It's a key game for both clubs, with Winchester emerging from a three-match losing start to beat Trojans and Rowledge in their last two games.

And Easton, beaten by the Academy side in their last outing, eager to cancel out the slender one-point lead United Services have established at the top.

But Billy Taylor, who has helped WKS win their last two games, is on County Championship duty duty for Sussex against Yorkshire at Headingley.

Third-placed Sparsholt, who have won their last three games, entertain Hungerford without skipper Rob Savage, but Ian Stuart is available to boost Ian Ellis's all-round options.

James Schofield, Irfan Shah and Luke Merry are all probably non-starters for the Hampshire Academy against Old Tauntonians & Romset on the Rose Bowl Nursery ground.

Skipper Tony Middleton, Lawrie Prittipaul, Iain Brunnschweiler and Chris Benham join the seven Academy students in the Young Hawks line up.

Unchanged Lymington visit basement boys Rowledge, with Jamie Donaldson and Jon Gillespie joining fit-again Mike Durand in the Trojans team at leaders United Services.

Division 3 leaders Purbrook visit Bashley (Rydal), with second-placed Alton - two points behind - entertaining Flamingo at the Jubilee Ground.

St Cross Symondians ought to step up the pressure on the leading pair by winning at Hartley Wintney, who have won only once in five outings.

Hambledon, who host neighbours Waterlooville, find themselves dropping several places down the table after being hit by 20-point deduction for fielding an unregistered overseas player earlier in the season.

Steve Moody returns from the World Cup to spearhead the Redlynch & Hale attack at New Milton, but injured key all-rounder Mark Elkins faces another six weeks on the sidelines.

Paultons hope to have principal run getter Colin James back in action against Leckford, who are one of four Premier League clubs involved in delayed National Village Championship ties on Sunday.

Leckford host Sparsholt, Hursley Park entertain Tichborne Park and Rowledge are at home to Hurley.

Alex Baker should be back from university to strengthen Ventnor's cause against struggling Gosport Borough at Steephill.
