SPCL 2 - Services back to summit as Easton go down
Mike Vimpany (as published in Daily Echo) - 30 June 2002

It's all change at the top of Southern Electric Premier League, Division 2 with Easton & Martyr Worthy's defeat at Lymington enabling United Services to regain the leadership, closely followed by the Hampshire Academy.

There's a shuffle round at the bottom too, with Trojans sinking to last place after a crushing 173-run defeat by the Academy and Hungerford in danger of being sucked into the mire after losing to Rowledge.

Western Australian Under-19 all-rounder Aaron Heal was Lymington's match winner against Easton & Martyr Worthy, who have dropped to third place after a five-wicket defeat.

He took 4-50 with his left-arm spin and then carried his bat for an unbeaten 94 to carry Lymington on to the fringe of the three-way leadership struggle.

Heal's impressive return included the scalps of four of Easton's top five batsmen, including Andy Birch (71), who dominated Easton's initial 100-2.

Despite Heal's intervention, the Green brothers Steve (58) and Shaun (31) eased Easton to a threatening 186-4 before the innings collapsed - the five wickets falling for only five runs - to 222 all out.

The young Australian left-hander led the way for Lymington, prospering in a 96-run start with Glyn Treagus (30) and, in mid-flow, with Matt Malloy (32), who earlier took a stunning catch to dismiss Easton's Dave Birch.

But Heal's prospects of reaching a century were effectively dashed when Neil Trestrail (23) emerged to slay a quick-fire 23 and take the Larks to the brink of victory.

Sparsholt's Ian Stuart virtually took on United Services single handed at the Norman Edwards Memorial Ground.

He hit an undefeated 76 but got little support from his team-mates as Sparsholt, struggling at 48-5, reached 144 all out, with Kelson Brooks (4-28) and Damien Carson (3-29) taking the lion's share of the spoils.

University student Tom Clark (63) and Gary Hounsome (49 not out) swept US back to the top of the table.

Iain Brunnschweiler cracked 134 as the Hampshire Academy went on a run romp at the expense of Trojans at the Rose Bowl Nursery.

The Hampshire 2nd XI wicket keeper thumped a six and 17 boundaries in his run-a-ball maiden SPL century after Jimmy Adams (57) had dominated a second-wicket stand between the pair.

Hampshire's 278-9 (Jamie Donaldson 3-57) was hopelessly beyond Trojans, who crashed to 105 all out, with David Griffiths (3-22) and Ian Hilsum (3-21) doing the damage.

Charles Forward followed up his unbeaten double century with a clinical 93 at Winchester, but it failed to spare Old Tauntonians & Romsey a three-wicket defeat.

Forward (93) and the dashing Max Smith (50) gave OTR an ideal 111-run platform, but the innings fell away badly, with Ollie Green (3-29) and Rhys Oxley (2-77) chipping away.

OT's 228-9 was always in danger from one-time team-mate Paul Baker (71) and Raj Naik (50), whose three-figure partnership eased WKS firmly into the driving seat.

Jimmy Taylor (36) feasted on some poor OTR bowling as Winchester cruised home by three wickets.

Nick Morant (67), aided by Darren Mitchell (49) and Jeff Annings (33), put Rowledge in command with a 266-run total against Hungerford, whose top order was blown away by the Australian all-rounder.

Annings, from the South Brisbane Grade club, took 4-48, including the first three wickets for six runs, before Hungerford rallied to reach 201 all out, with skipper Owen Dawkins (43) marshalling his troops.
