Caddick out of one-dayers
Wisden CricInfo staff - June 17, 2002

Less than 24 hours after England's dramatic win at Old Trafford the team's thoughts have turned to the forthcoming NatWest Series with the news that Andy Caddick will not be available for selection. Caddick broke down with a pulled intercostal muscle after bowling only 5.3 overs in Sri Lanka's first innings and took no further part in the match. An examination by a specialist confirmed the worst, and Caddick faces four to six weeks on the sidelines. He will now aim to be fit in time for the first Test against India at Lord's, which starts on July 25.

Another facing a lay-off is Mark Butcher, who was rated a doubtful starter for the third Test but delayed an operation to play and went on to score a hundred. Although he was not going to be part of the one-day side, he will undergo knee surgery on Thursday and is expected to be out for three to four weeks. Like Caddick, he will be aiming to be fit in time for the first Test against India.

That is not the end of Butcher's troubles. On Friday he is due to face an England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) disciplinary hearing over comments he made in a local newspaper about Sri Lanka's Ruchira Perera suspect action following last month's Lord's Test.

Injury prone Ashley Giles has struggled at Old Trafford with a back problem and will miss Warwickshire's one-day match against Kent on Wednesday. He is expected to be available to play in Saturday's Benson & Hedges Cup final against Essex.

England had hoped to be boosted by the return of Darren Gough, who has not played since returning home injured after of England's one-day series in New Zealand. Although he underwent some gentle net practce at Old Trafford, he looked far from fit. His rehabilitation is set to continue with matches for the county's academy and 2nd XI teams "with a view to joining the England squad" ahead of their opening one-day match of the NatWest Series, against Sri Lanka, at Trent Bridge on June 27.
