'I love the pressure' Wisden CricInfo staff - June 27, 2002
In the second part of his Lord's press conference, Sachin Tendulkar talks about how he handles being in the public eye on and off the field, as well as England's negative bowling last winter and his memories of playing in this country. "I enjoy the pressure", Tendulkar insisted. "It keeps me on my toes". Batting with such a weight of expectation on his shoulders only makes it more special when he delivers, such is the pleasure he is giving to his crazed legions of fans.
There is a flip side to that adulation, however, and it can often be difficult for Tendulkar and his teamates to lead a normal life away from cricket: "We can't go out in public with our families and play with our kids in the park." Tendulkar played it cool when quizzed about England's leg-stump attack to him during last winter's Test series. "It's part of Test cricket and within the laws", he said. "They were trying to test my patience." And did it work? Not according to Sachin, who insisted his wild swing against Ashley Giles, which led to him being stumped for the only time in Tests, was simply bad judgement and not the product of impatience. His favourite memory in England is unsurprisingly his maiden Test hundred, at Old Trafford in 1990. At the other end of the scale is India's failure to qualify for the semi-finals of the 1999 World Cup. A series win this summer would be some consolation for that.
