Cairns out for remainder of England series - no word beyond that
Lynn McConnell - 16 March 2002

New Zealand supporters had their worst fears realised today when it was announced that all-rounder Chris Cairns is out for the remainder of the National Bank Series.

The injury he suffered while fielding on the first day of the Test has been described as a partial tear to the patella tendon.

It was said when the injury first happened that he would be able to bat in New Zealand's second innings.

New Zealand Cricket medical advisor Warren Frost said today: "At this stage the surgeon is looking at what options are available to Chris and he has booked him in for an MRI scan which we hope he will have next week.

"Unfortunately the injury has ruled Chris out of taking any further part in the Test series against England."

While it is the same knee that was operated on last season it is a different injury.

There is no word as to whether he will be available for the Sharjah and Pakistan tours, or to fulfil his contract with Nottinghamshire during the winter.
