Bashley see off the old enemy to land Indoor Cup
Trevor Phillips - 16 March 2002

Bashley have won the inaugural New Forest Indoor League Anniversary Cup thanks to their comfortable four wicket victory over rivals Lymington in last Sunday's final at Lymington Sports Centre.

The tone for the match was set early on as the dangerous Peter Tapper was dismissed by Grierson for just 11. Trevor Phillips fell to Simon Dean in the following over before John McGuirk and Matt Molloy (26) began to rebuild the innings with some attractive strokeplay.

McGuirk flayed Shaun Lilley for 3 sixes in one over, but with wickets falling at regular intervals Lymington were finally dismissed for just 114 in the final over. McGuirk was the last man to fall having scored a gutsy 43.

Chasing Lymington's modest total, Bashley were in control throughout with both Lilley and Neil Taylor effortlessly reaching their retirements.

Lymington's only early success came from the boot of Tapper who ran out Brian Vibert for 18 with a shot that Alan Shearer would have been proud of. Although Steve Latimore was also later run out, it was all immaterial for Lymington as Dean and Grierson saw Bashley home with 9 balls and 4 wickets to spare.

The final proved to be something of an anti-climax after the earlier pulsating semi-final between Lymington and Cadnam. Molloy (47no) and Phillips (28no) had guided Lymington to an imposing 142. Cadnam set off like a train with Paul Jewar (45) and Paul Kerley (22) producing some scintillating running between the wickets.

Tapper and Wayne Smith both took wickets to haul Lymington back into the tie, but Richard Bull entered the fray and kept Cadnam up with the required rate. The turning point of the match was Kerley's marginal run out for 22 which left Bull to try and win the match on his own.

Needing 17 from McGuirk's final over, Bull smashed 13 before running himself out with just one ball remaining, leaving Cadnam agonisingly close to a remarkable victory.

Bashley's path to the final had been somewhat more comfortable. They recorded a 44 run victory over Esso thanks to Steve Latimore who hit an unbeaten 43 in Bashley's 144 for 5. Bash then produced a superb fielding display as the Oilmen slumped to 100 all out with only Steve Rice (38) putting up any resistance.

Following the final, Bashley's Ross Grierson was presented with the Cup by New Forest League stalwart Chris Walford. The League's three divisional winners - Lymington, Cadnam and Pylewell Park - also received their trophies, and League Chairman Peter Tapper gave his thanks to all the umpires and committee members who had ensured the smooth running of the League throughout the winter.

Special mention was made of statistician Robin Skeet who has been on hand to record scores and compile league tables virtually every week during the League's 25 years of existence. Organisations such as the New Forest Indoor League would find it hard to operate without dedicated characters like Robin.
