Jamaica claim honours on day one
Staff Reporter - 16 March 2002

Despite handy contributions from captain Richard Smith and Daren Ganga, Trinidad & Tobago were left tottering at 200 for eight at the end of day one of their Busta Cup semi-final against Jamaica.

Put into bat in the morning, Trinidad made a decent start; openers Ganga and Imran Jan putting on 50 before Jan was dismissed for 20. A mini-collapse ensued; the next two wickets falling for the addition of just two runs later.

Ganga and Smith, then, put on 35 for the fourth wicket but Ganga's dismissal with the score of 87 plunged Trinidad into further strife.

Smith, though, found an able ally in youngster Zaheer Ali; the duo putting on the best partnership of the inings. But after 61 runs were raised, Ali fell for 36.

Smith too did not last for much longer after that; becoming the eight wicket to fall with the score on 180. He made 63 off 161 balls made with the aid of five fours.

For Jamaica, the impressive off-spinner Gareth Breese was the most successful bowler yet again, claiming 3-34 from 26 disciplined overs. Fast bowler Laurie Williams, for his part, claimed two wickets.
