Dawn PCB to honour banned Salim Malik
21 March 2002

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will also honour banned former captain Salim Malik when it celebrates its 1992 World Cup victory on March 30.

Salim, who went on to play in the 1996 and 1999 World Cups, had a dismal tournament by his standards when he failed with the bat. Pakistan won the title on March 25 in Melbourne but the PCB has delayed holding the reception in Lahore until March 30 because of Ashura.

Salim was banned in May 2000 by the PCB on the recommendation of Justice Malik Mohammad Qayyum who investigated the charges of corruption in Pakistan cricket. But a spokesman of the PCB said Salim Malik was a clean cricketer in 1992 and whatever he did, it was after 1994. "He has been penalized for his wrongdoings after 1994. But as far as the PCB is concerned, he was a clean cricketer in 1992," the spokesman said.

The reception is part of Pakistan's Golden Jubilee of Test cricket celebrations. "It is a great honour for the PCB to celebrate both the occasions which fall in the same year. We will honour everyone who was part of Pakistan cricket from Oct 16, 1952 to Oct 16, 2002.

The PCB plans to hold a 400-people gathering in which it is inviting former presidents, chairmen, secretaries, chief executives, treasurers. In addition to the 14 World Cup players, it will invite the current boys.

The 1992 World Cup squad will be awarded plagues and mementos. The PCB will also award special prizes to cricketers who made records in one-day cricket.

The record holders include Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, Javed Miandad, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Saqlain Mushtaq, Moin Khan, Saeed Anwar, Aqib Javed, Jalaluddin, Shahid Afridi, Zaheer Abbas and Majid Khan.

The 1992 World Cup squad was: Imran Khan, Javed Miandad, Ramiz Raja, Aamir Sohail, Ijaz Ahmad, Salim Malik, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Zahid Fazal, Moin Khan, Wasim Akram, Aqib Javed, Mushtaq Ahmad, Wasim Haider, Iqbal Sikander.

Intikhab Alam was the coach.
