Katich signs for Yorkshire CricInfo - 21 March 2002
Yorkshire have signed the Australian batsman Simon Katich as cover for their captain, Darren Lehmann. Lehmann will be unavailable for the early part of the season following Australia's confirmation yesterday that they will tour Zimbabwe next month. Katich, 26, scored more than 1,000 runs for Durham in 2000, and played his first Test for Australia against England at Headingley last summer. The Western Australian will take part in Yorkshire's opening two championship games against Surrey and Somerset, and their five Benson & Hedges Cup qualifying games. Yorkshire coach Wayne Clark said: "I have worked with him a lot since he came into the Western Australian team - and as well as being a fine batsman he is also the type of character we need. "He will be used to the conditions, having had a season with Durham, and I am confident that he will adapt and settle in quickly." © CricInfo Ltd.
