Gilchrist adds another Gold Cup to trophy cabinet www.baggygreen.com.au - 28 March 2002
Adam Gilchrist was honoured as Western Australia's outstanding cricketer of the past year when he was named the winner of the 2001-02 Gold Cup at a gala function in Perth last night. Gilchrist, currently on tour with the national team in South Africa, was chosen ahead of Justin Langer, Damien Martyn, Jo Angel and Brad Williams under a voting system that ranks players on the basis of both international and interstate performances over the past season. It was the fourth time that the Western Australian captain and national vice-captain had won the award, and followed another dominant summer both as a wicketkeeper and as a batsman. It was also his second victory in successive years. In other categories, Williams won the Lawrie Sawle Medal - awarded to the best and fairest player in Pura Cup and ING Cup matches - to join an exclusive club headed by Simon Katich, the winner of the inaugural medal last season. Pace bowler Angel won the Excalibur Award for the second year in succession after being judged as the player who best embodied the spirit of the Western Warriors. Middle order batsman Marcus North meanwhile walked away with two trophies in the wake of his sparkling individual finish to the 2001-02 summer. North was nominated by Western Australian head coach Michael Veletta as the recipient of the Coach's Award. In recognition of his unbeaten innings of 200 against Victoria in a Pura Cup match in Melbourne, he was also the winner of the President's Silver Trophy, the prize awarded to the player who produced the most outstanding individual performance of the season for Western Australia. © 2002 CricInfo Ltd
