Harper: We must improve in every aspect Wisden CricInfo staff - March 23, 2002
Blunders in the field and running between the wickets have affected the overall performance of the West Indies team in series at home and aboard, coach Roger Harper claimed on Friday. Commenting at the start of a week-long training camp in preparation for the series against India next month, Harper stressed: "We must improve in every aspect of the game. We will be working on the basics and try to get it right. "I want all the players to be totally focused on the approach we plan for the home series against India because we want to be competitive and successful against them," said Harper. He added that Garry Sobers's role during the camp would be to help everyone in the team, particularly with their batting. His input should help them to be better prepared. Along with Sobers, former fast bowler Andy Roberts is also sharing his experience and knowledge with the players. Harper pointed out most of the players were involved with their respective teams in the Busta Cup and Busta International Shield. "The camp gives us the opportunity for everyone to come together. I want us to have the right chemistry," explained Harper. Both Brian Lara and Ramnaresh Sarwan, who have both been injured, are in the squad. Lara suffered an injury to his left elbow last December in Sri Lanka and has been having therapy, while Sarwan was hit with back problems. The Indians, led by Sourav Ganguly, are due in the Caribbean in early April to play five Tests and five one-day internationals. The first Test is scheduled to be played at the Bourda Oval in Guyana from April 11-15.
