Queensland complete Pura Cup hat-trick Wisden CricInfo staff - March 26, 2002
Queensland wrapped up their fifth domestic title in eight seasons when they crushed Tasmania outright by 235 runs in the final of the Pura Cup – formerly the Sheffield Shield - at Brisbane. Needing 530 to win, Tasmania were all out in their second innings for 294 almost an hour after lunch on the fifth day, having resumed on their overnight score of 190 for 4. The result means that Tasmania's barren run in the competition goes on. They have been taking part for 25 years without recording a victory. Queensland were in command from the moment they dismissed Tasmania for 141 in the first innings, which gave them a lead of 161. The Queenslanders became the first team to snap up the inter-state title three years in a row since Western Australia completed a hat-trick, under former Australian Test left-hander Graeme Wood, in 1988-89. Queensland's golden run follows a stretch of 68 years without winning the competition, which they first entered in 1926-27. © Wisden CricInfo Ltd |
