Kent face uphill struggle to avoid defeat
Vic Isaacs - 9 May 2002
There are days in the County Championship which teams could call their own. This was such a day for Hampshire who dominated from start to finish and are poised for their first Frizzell win of the season.
Resuming overnight on 303-9, the home side were indebted to a pinch-hitting style innings from James Hamblin. Better know for his aggressive style of batting in Limited-Overs matches, he chanced his arm, was dropped and then went onto a maiden first-class 50 with style. Alan Mullally played his part in holding together the other end.
Kent's reply started badly and never really improved. Dimitri Mascarenhas and Mullally used the seam and bounce of the Rose Bowl pitch to good effect, and Neil Johnson and Shaun Udal mopped up the remainder. Andrew Symonds kept the innings from a complete collapse, but the visitors were asked to follow on by Hampshire skipper Robin Smith, 227 in arrears.
Ed Smith with 61* overnight gave a glimmer of hope to his side, but with the dangerous Symonds out, it will be an uphill struggle to save the game.
