scorecard

It took West Indies just over 40 minutes to wrap up the Indian innings and clinch the Test, and the series 2-1. The main threat this morning was the weather – play was delayed by about 20 minutes due to a persistent drizzle, and showers had been forecast throughout the day.

However, given the brittleness of the Indian tail, Carl Hooper needn't have worried. He took the new ball as soon as play commenced, and 8.3 overs is all it took Cameron Cuffy and Mervyn Dillon to finish it off.

Cuffy got prodigious movement with his in-dippers, and almost trapped Ajay Ratra lbw in his first over. Ratra was saved by the height, and by the fact that the ball perhaps did too much. He got it right in his next over, rapping Ratra on the crease in front of middle. Umpire Russel Tiffin was convinced the ball would have clipped leg, and Ratra trudged back for a dogged, 86-ball 19 (242 for 8).

The dark, low clouds were threatening imminent rain – the drizzle started again during the presentation ceremony – but the Indian lower-order was in no mood to make it tougher for West Indies. Javagal Srinath didn't inspire any confidence, backing away to leg before the ball was delivered. Cuffy struck him on the shoulder with a short one, and, next over, knocked back his middle stump with one more that jagged back.

It was all over six balls later, when Zaheer Khan scooped Dillon to Pedro Collins at mid-off for 12. It was Dillon's first wicket of the innings in a series which he dominated, taking 23 wickets at 27.22. It was also his 99th Test wicket in 26 matches.

Wavell Hinds's 113 in the first innings – the only century in the Test – was good enough to win him the Man-of-the-Match award, while Shivnarine Chanderpaul was declared Man of the Series for his amazingly consistent run – 562 runs at 140.50.

It was a wonderful comeback by West Indies after losing the second Test at Port-of-Spain. For India, the search for that elusive series win outside the subcontinent continues.
