The Australian Cricket Board (ACB) today clarified the Pura Cup playing condition for extra time, following confusion during the match played between the Victorian Bushrangers and the Queensland Bulls at the Melbourne Cricket Ground from 8 – 11 November.
A report from match umpires Bob Parry (Victoria) and Richard Patterson (Victoria) detailed the lack of a formal request for play to be extended late on day three of the match (10 November), contrary to the requirement set out in clause five of the Pura Cup Playing Conditions.
Clause five of the Pura Cup Playing Conditions states:
The umpires may decide to play 30 minutes (a minimum of eight overs) extra time at the end of any day (other than the last day) if requested by either captain if, in the umpires' opinion, it would bring about an outright result on that day (this is in addition to the maximum one hour's extra time provided for in 4(a) (ii) above). If the umpires do not believe an outright result can be achieved, no extra time shall be allowed…
The report from Mr Parry and Mr Patterson detailed that with one over to be bowled before the scheduled close of play, the umpires consulted to see if any request had been made by either team to extend play. No request had been received at that time.
At the conclusion of the last over of scheduled play, the umpires paused allowing for an approach, but with one not forthcoming, the umpires called "time" meaning the match would be completed on the fourth day (11 November).
The Bushrangers won the match today by four wickets, after reaching 163-run target six wickets down.
