Adams suspended and will miss first Auckland game
Lynn McConnell - 26 November 2002

Auckland and New Zealand player Andre Adams has been suspended by the Auckland Cricket Association (ACA) until the evening of Tuesday next week.

The suspension is the result of an incident in club cricket in Auckland on Sunday and will mean that Adams will not play in Auckland's first State Championship match against Northern Districts starting on Friday.

Under the ACA judicial system, the matter can be referred to the Code of Conduct convener (lawyer Andrew Gilchrist) who may bring the player, the player's representatives, and the citing umpires together in a conference call.

In this instance, as a result of that process, the parties have agreed there was a breach of the Code of Conduct/Spirit of Cricket. It was also agreed that a one-match suspension would be an appropriate penalty.

As the parties have reached unanimous agreement on the outcome, the ACA by-laws provide that no hearing needs to be held.

The incident occurred in a one-day semi-final match between Howick Pakuranga and Adams' club, Grafton. The citing came after Adams had words with an opposition batsman, and later pushed him.

Auckland Cricket's chief executive Lindsay Crocker was happy with the outcome.

"While exact details of the incident will not be made public, I am satisfied Andre and other players have been given a message this sort of activity is not acceptable," he said.

"It is disappointing that Andre will miss the opening match of the series for the State Auckland Aces, but the message is clear for all players under the 'Spirit of Cricket' mantra we support in Auckland."

Adams was also satisfied with the process. "I'm disappointed not to be taking my place in Friday's match, but I accept I shouldn't have put myself into this situation."

Tomorrow Auckland Cricket will announce the State Auckland Aces team for the match against the Knights.
