Christchurch teams named for Southern Zone Under-17 tournament

Christchurch's two sides to compete in the Southern Zone Secondary/Under-17 Tournament to be held in Timaru from December 16-19 have been named.

The competition involves seven teams from the South Island plus a South Canterbury Under-14 side to fill the bye. Last season's competition was dominated by the Christchurch teams with Christchurch Red taking out the winning honours and Christchurch Black placed third. Two teams represent Otago while the Canterbury region makes up the remainder of the competition with a team from Canterbury Country, South Canterbury and Mid Canterbury.

A Southern Zone team will be selected from the tournament. This team will attend the National Secondary Schoolgirls' Tournament being held in Palmerston North from January 15-17. Northern, Central and Southern Zone Teams will play each other in 30-over matches with advanced coaching offered as part of the daily programme.

The teams are:

Christchurch Red: Alexis Baronian, Lisa Brown, Frances Clark, Amanda Dickie, Rowhan Kelly, Josie King, Tracy O'Neill, Laura Paine, Fiona Paton, Amy Rendel, Kate Saunders, Lara Thompson. Coach: Ann McKenna. Manager: Sue Saunders.

Christchurch Black: Andrea Brown, Anna Ferguson, Megan Jamieson, Elizabeth Kitson, Diana Luxon, Nicole Ockenden, Sarah Parker, Emily Quested, Hayley Rossiter, Kelly Samson, Annaleise Scott, Christine Wilson. Coach: Mike Dickie. Manager: Mary-Ann Wilson.

Notable omissions are Rebecca Steele who has State Canterbury Magicians commitments, Ruth Bourke who will be attending a New Zealand Soccer Academy and Alexa Bennett who is injured.

Non-travelling reserves are: Nicole Sullivan, Zoe Tahuhu, Michelle Pitcher, Lizzie Buchanan, Sarah le Page and Natasha Carruth.
