Declaration for war
Wisden CricInfo staff - November 7, 2002
Was there any first-class cricket played during the Great War outside England? asks Geoff Gresty
Very little first-class cricket was played anywhere during the Great War (1914-18), and none at all in England. There was one Sheffield Shield season in Australia in 1914-15, then the worsening international season meant there were no more senior matches there until 1918-19. There were a few matches in New Zealand too. And there was a limited amount of cricket in India throughout the war – the Bombay Quadrangular tournament (involving teams of Muslims, Hindus, Parsees and Europeans) was played each season.
