Saqlain shatters Zimbabwe
Wisden CricInfo staff - November 15, 2002

Close Pakistan 29 for 0 (Taufeeq Umar 16*, Salim Elahi 13*) trail Zimbabwe 178 (G Flower 54, Saqlain Mushtaq 7-66) by 149 runs
scorecard

Saqlain Mushtaq claimed the second-best figures of his Test career to send Zimbabwe spiralling from 94 for 2 to 178 all out in less than 72 overs, as Pakistan took control of the second Test at Bulawayo.

Zimbabwe had made tortuous but determined progress in the morning session, after winning the toss and choosing to bat first on an excellent wicket that regularly produces big scores. Shoaib Akhtar and Waqar Younis claimed an early wicket apiece, including the debutant Mark Vermeulen, who was trapped lbw for 2 in Shoaib's first over, but Grant Flower and Alistair Campbell combined to see off the threat posed by Pakistan's battery of quick bowlers.

But they were unable to contend with Saqlain's wiles. He was given just a brief three-over spell before lunch, but he picked up three wickets in the second session to leave Zimbabwe teetering at 119 for 5. Campbell was caught behind for 46, before Flower (54) and the out-of-form Hamilton Masakadza (0) were both dismissed in the space of four deliveries.

By tea, all eyes were on the ubiquitous Andy Flower, but even he could not hold the Pakistanis back despite adding a handy 36 for the sixth wicket with Tatenda Taibu, who became Saqlain's fourth wicket when he was well caught down the leg side by Kamran Akmal (155 for 6).

Andy Blignaut, who rescued Zimbabwe with a timely half-century at Harare, was unable to repeat his heroics and fell for a fourth-ball duck, at which point a frustrated Flower took the attack to Shoaib and was caught at cover by Inzamam-ul-Haq for 30 (161 for 8). Saqlain completed the rout by clean-bowling Ray Price and Henry Olonga. He has now taken 195 wickets in 45 Tests, though his best haul remains the 8 for 164 he took against England at Lahore in December 2000.

Pakistan had a tricky 14 overs to see out before the close, but Salim Elahi and Taufeeq Umar carried them through with few alarms.
