Karachi Whites crowned U-19 Grade-I champions 5 October 2002
Karachi Whites clinched their 12th title in the National Junior (Under-19) Grade-I Cricket Championship after scoring a comprehensive seven-wicket victory over Lahore Blues at Multan Cricket Stadium here Friday. Karachi Whites made light work of their target of 155 after resuming on the last day of the four-day final at 12 for no loss. Opener Mubashir Ahmed completed a fine double by stroking 54 off 83 balls despite an injured finger. He made 71 in the first innings. Asadullah Sumairi also played a vital hand. He contributed 49. Test stalwart Inzamam-ul-Haq, sidelined out of the current Test series against Australia with a heel injury, graced the final as a chief guest in his hometown and distributed prizes. Karachi Whites skipper Khalid Latif, unable to bat in the second innings because of a finger injury, received the winners cash award of Rs 40,000 on behalf of his team and the Man-of-the-Match prize of Rs 5,000 for his magnificent unbeaten 161 in the first innings of this game. Khalid also collected two individual awards of Rs 2,000 each after being adjudged the best batsman and fielder of the championship. Karachi Whites duo of Aftab Ahmed and Naeem Ahmed were declared the best bowler and wicket-keeper, respectively. Inzamam presented the runners-up prize of Rs 20,000 to Lahore Blues captain Shahnawaz Malik. Karachi Whites, who first won this championship in the 1985-86 season, were also champions in 1986-87, 1987-88, 1989-90, 1991-92, 1992-93, 1994-95, 1995-96, 1996-97, 1999-2000 and 2000-01. © Dawn
