New Super 8 competition a hit
Canterbury Cricket Association - 22 October 2002

A pilot Super 8 competition held for under-15 boys in the Sydenham and Lancaster Park/Woolston areas earlier this year was such a success the new format will now been opened up to boys and girls, of all ages, from all secondary schools throughout the Christchurch area.

The initiative formed part of the Community Cricket Project that is currently underway in the Sydenham and Lancaster Park/Woolston catchments.

There are currently three competitions running, under-18 boys', under-15 boys' and a girls' competition. The format focuses on fun and participation and the rules are designed to give everyone a chance to bat and bowl. The match is a 20-over affair so games are completed within two hours on a Wednesday afternoon. There is also an element of competition which adds some spice!

With the World Cup being held in South Africa in February 2003, the Super 8 Competitions for the first school term next year will be run with a 'World Cup' theme. Each school team will be given an International team name and the participants will be asked to identify with one of the players from that particular country. They will also be asked to dress in the colours of their respective International team.

It promises to be a great competition, while also keeping everyone's attention on the excitement over in South Africa!
