One of the outstanding one-day international bowling performances was overshadowed by the most ugly scenes of the tournament. Another, more frightening, crowd invasion left a ground steward suffering broken ribs and prompted England captain Stewart to concede the match, an unprecedented occurrence at this level. Waqar Younis's magnificent swing and seam bowling earned him figures of seven for 36, the second-best return ever, and had England reeling at 58 for seven, on course for their lowest total – set in their previous match against Australia. They were saved from this second successive humiliation by Hollioake, whose defiant half-century saw them into three figures. Pakistan were on the brink of victory at 153 for four, with more than ten overs remaining, when the crowd spilled on to the pitch and the steward, attempting to protect the stumps, was beaten.
